THE METROPOLITAN OPERA LIVE IN HD FROM NEW YORK




CATCH TWO SUPERB OPERAS EXCLUSIVELY AT SELECT STER-KINEKOR AND CINEMA NOUVEAU THEATRES THIS JANUARY

The highly successful sixth season of opera, Live in HD by the Metropolitan Opera in New York, will be screened exclusively at select Ster-Kinekor and Cinema Nouveau theatres in January 2013.
Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball) screens on 19 January and the ever –popular Aida screens on 26 January 2013.

These grand opera productions are filmed at the magnificent Metropolitan Opera House in New York, which is home to some of the most talented singers, conductors, composers, orchestra world. Their past productions have received great acclaim and have gained recognition around the world.
Now, and as it has done since Live in HD began, Cinema Nouveau continues to provide audiences with the exclusive opportunity to witness these spectacular and award-winning live broadcasts on the big screen right here in South Africa.

Conducted by Fabio Luisi, Un Ballo in Maschera (A Masked Ball) is a new production by acclaimed director David Alden portraying Giuseppe Verdi’s vivid drama of jealousy and vengeance. It stars Sondra Radvanovsky as Amelia, Marcelo Alvarez as Gustavo III, Dmitri Hvorostovsky as Anckarstrom, Stephanie Blythe as the fortuneteller Ulrica and Kathleen Kim as the page Oscar. This work is a staple of the operatic repertory that features passionate arias and a thrilling duet for the ill-fated lovers Amelia and Gustavo, which Alden sets in a dreamlike vision of early 20th- century Sweden.



January 26 sees Verdi’s Aida come to life on the big screen. Also conducted by Fabio Luisi, this popular opera is set in ancient Egypt, and the production follows the story of an enslaved Ethiopian princess named Aida, played by the Ukrainian soprano Liudmyla Monastyrska. Olga Borodina sings Aida’s royal rival, Amneris, and Roberto Alagna is the hero Radames, who must choose between his love for Aida and his duty to his country.
